I received a few inquiries about the Boeing 747 fly-over of NJ and the southern tip of Manhattan a couple weeks ago and so thought I would post this blog. The only recent news is that a future planned fly-over has been cancelled. Apparently the White House got all the publicity photos they needed during that single pass. One also assumes they got all the negative press they needed for a while, as well.
For those of you living on Mars who didn’t hear about it, there was a scare when an unidentified jumbo jet flew over the World Trade Center followed by two fighter jets. It flew in low, over New Jersey, and across the Wall Street area. The story from the military attaché at the White House is that he told the chief of parade permits in Mayor Bloomberg’s office about the flyover but also told him is was secret, on a “need to know” basis. The parade permit official didn’t think there was much of a need to know so he didn’t tell the Mayor. Another victory for the American security apparatus.
Meanwhile, from what I can gather, 99% of Manhattan was not aware the fly-over was happening. I received an e-mail from an out-of-state friend asking me if I was OK and needed emergency rations or anything. I said the city was in a panic with rich upper East-side families looting stores for Pellegrino bottled water and escaping in their Jaguars. Pesto was up to $20 a jar, etc., but the news didn’t make the evening papers.
The whole thing reminded me of my e-mail to my sister a couple weeks before about the tornados in Arkansas. “What tornados?” she asked. Or perhaps the past calls to brothers in California after earthquakes. “Yeah, a few things fell off the walls but they didn’t let us off work or anything.”
The NYC parade permit head is available for interviews. In fact, he can come to you in his new dog-catching van. The former White House military attaché is measuring ice flows off the Aleutians with Obama administration green stimulus money. We are all hoping the next crisis results in days off.
